Message from Roger L. Powell, Chair PDF  | Print |
Now that Virginia International University (VIU) has been duly accredited by The Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, the Business Programs Department of VIU will continue to strive to become a premier and unique internationally-respected school of excellence. Because the majority of our students represent many diverse cultures and languages, Business Programs will further develop and introduce new cross-cultural competencies to enable our graduates to master the skills that are required for effective global management.

Our objectives are to reaffirm and enhance VIU’S strategic and integrative approach to understanding and addressing critical issues in global business. It is also our goal to become a leading institution in the education of global mangers dedicated to developing global leaders who create sustainable prosperity worldwide. Through our highly competent and dedicated faculty, Business Programs curricula are designed to facilitate the development of the global mindset which is critical to managing effectively in different social, economic and political environments. Our faculty members are not pure lecturers, per se, but act as facilitators to interactively create and disseminate new knowledge, and to build a knowledge based on multicultural management.

Business Programs is aggressively encouraging faculty members to conduct research on academic program development and coursework, cross-cultural education, to research the role and impact of culture in international business, as well as upon economic and social development; all to share their findings with the academic and business communities. The intent is to prepare our students to become future global leaders with our instructors helping students learn contemporary solutions, and best practices to real-time problems for enterprises facing challenges in multilingual and multicultural management.

Underlying these efforts, through teaching and research, is to ensure that our graduates are instilled with solid ethical practices, because good ethics is good business, and they will become better managers that companies can rely on for their integrity. A common thread though all our courses is to integrate professional ethics and global citizenship into the curriculum of Business Programs. This is particularly important at VIU because our graduates enter a truly global environment and the longer distances, combined with cultural differences, make it imperative that companies can be assured their corporate image is not tarnished by their remotely located managers.
